PVC VS PE
Polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are plastics that form through a mechanism called radical polymerization. Similarly, they are the most used materials for underground pipes and in many other items you use in your daily life. They have several characteristics in common, but also significant differences. What are the differences between them?
In terms of structure, PVC is formed from long chains of carbon atoms with chlorine atoms attached to it. Whereas, PE is a large chain of carbon atoms with only hydrogen atoms attached to it. PVC always has the same basic structure.
However, PE is divided into several different types based on the degree of branching from the main chain in each polymer. Some types of polyethylene, such as low-density polyethylene, are highly branched, while other types have a less branched structure.
Strengths
Both PVC and PE are waterproof, but PVC is more so. Hence it is commonly used in bottles, doors, windows and safe for water piping. It is also more fireproof due to the chlorine atoms it releases during a fire inhibiting the process of combustion. This material is also great as cling film as it has good stretching, clinging and most importantly non-corrosive properties. They are hence good to preserve and display food be it in cold or heated environments. There is a misconception about PVC containing chemicals that are harmful to the body, however PVC films used in Lacy’s products that are approved by the Food Drug Administration (FDA), and are completely safe for food wrapping.
